Soft drinks is normally used to describe carbonated beverages.

These beverages are produced by injecting carbon dioxide into a drink at several atmospheres pressure. At high pressure, large volumes of carbon dioxide can be injected. When the pressure is released after the bottle or can is opened, the bubbles start to form. Many of the leading brands such as Coke and Pepsi were first bottled in the 19th century. However, soda water dates back to 1798 and the soda fountain to 1819 when Samuel Fahnestock patented it.
