I just bought some coke (the drink!) and it tasted much better than normal coke from the uk. The label had Arabic looking writing on it why is this?

Its the difference between (HFCS) high fructose corn syrup and sugar.

In the US, HFCS is much cheaper to produce due to trade restrictions, taxes, and local farm subsidies; I can imagine the UK has similar practices. Sweetener is added at the local bottling plant, so it depends on where it is bottled to determine what gets used.

There is an on going conspiracy theory about the switch to HFCS back in the 80's; Coca-cola introduced "Coke," which was a very different formula and taste then the original. "Coca-cola" was then phased out from store shelves. The new Coke was a failure [and if you have ever tasted it you would know why]. Several years had passed before a modified original formula branded "Coca-cola classic" was re-introduced, but this time it contained HFCS instead of sugar. It is thought that the brief switch to the new "Coke" brand was part of a long term strategy to introduce HFCS into the classic formula without consumers noticing.

In areas where sugar is cheaper then HFCS, the original coca-cola formula is used, and therefore, has the better taste (I get mine from Mexico).

Foreign Coca-Cola not only depends of the amount of sugar but the type of sugar. I live in the US but would much rather drink Coca-Cola from Mexico. Here our Coke is made with high-fructose corn syrup, but made with real cane sugar in Mexico which makes it taste much better.

I do know Coca-Cola opened a large bottling facility in Kiev Ukraine recently to bottle not only Coke but also Fanta and a local spring water. Ukraine Coca-Cola tastes the same as in the USA. And a bit cheaper also.

Ive Found the same thing but with opposite results.

Ive 5 teenage kids so we go through a fair amount of Coke and the labels with the foreign writing on them appear to be made in England for export or abroad for import, I presume the quality of water that goes into the mix is of different quality and content, ie ADDITIVES,

We live in Scotland & we tend not to buy it as it has an after taste, Mabe we're spoiled with the quality of water we get here or mabe its just personal preference to taste

Because we are used to the tastes of the water in this country.

Haha.. Go taste the coke called "Beverly" from Italy. I was in middle school when I tasted it at the World Of Coke. I still can taste it's horrible taste in my mouth. Some were good, but if you want to change your mind on that theory seriously try it out. It's like grinding metal with cucumbers and drinking it.

If its anything like the stuff i used to drink when i lived in Egypt, it tastes much better. Less sugar i think, & i prefer the diet coke.

ps, i was never ill by drinking Arabic coke & i lived there for 2 yrs.

it is obviously from the arab market not a british one, coke is manufactured at different places in the world "under licence" from the coca cola company. i used to live in dubai and there it is manufacturered locally but tasted same to me, only difference is it cost about 20p a bottle, here its a rip off. was it in a glass bottle? usually there it is, or was a few years ago, i think coke tastes different depending what its sold in, i personally prefer tins to bottles but thats another debate!

They use more sugar in foreign coke. This also applies to fanta (which is from the coca cola branch)

They sell this in our local kebab shop and I hate it - I think it tastes like diet coke. I guess if you prefer diet coke then it probably is nice but for us full fat coke drinkers I would not recommend it!

I've heard that they vary the amount of sugar depending on the country it would be sold at.

It seems that the people of some countries like sweeter things. Mostly South Americans and North African countries, also some Pacific group of islands/countries were mentioned.

i'd wouldnt drink that EVER.... its the same method as how they make it in india... its not by the original manufactors... they add their own chemicals and their how horrid stuff to make it taste better..... all their ingredences they use (altho not labelled) are illegal to use in the uk, so i really wouldnt drink anything imported, drink the british stuff... it causes diarrhea and kills the digestive system
