Question:
Need something to replace morning coffee...?

Recently I started getting an upset stomach after drinking coffee. I thought maybe I was developing lactose intolerance and tried a non-dairy creamer, but it didn't help. Even just black coffee interrupted the rest of my day. I am about to start student teaching in a Kindergarten class and cannot afford to run to the restroom whenever I need to. I do have IBS, and have been told that coffee (even decaf) can effect the intestines, but I was really hoping it wouldn't in me. I don't seem to be that lucky. I've never had a problem with sodas though (the caffeine in them) but I don't really drink soda all that often because I don't like the taste much.

So I am looking for some other drink that could replace my morning coffee. I am completely unproductive until I have my coffee. So please! Help! Right now this is my only source of caffeine! And if there is a coffee that is GOOD for a sensitive "tummy" please let me know! THANKS!

As someone else mentioned, a good replacement for morning coffee is tea with a little milk and sugar, but I want to add that, like coffee, certain teas have more or less caffeine in them than others. Since it sounds to me like you're wanting something that can replace your coffee, caffeine wise, you'll want to make sure to buy teas that are "Highly Caffeinated". This means you want your teas to have at least 100 mg of caffeine, since on average, a typical cup of coffee has 108 mg of caffeine and has about 15 mg of caffeine per oz for an 8 oz cup.

My personal recommendation if you're switching from coffee to tea, is Fast Lane by Celestial Seasonings, however it is out of stock and is only brought back for a limited time, so you're probably not going to find it in the stores. My second recommendation is Pacific Chai Teas. You can find these in a variety of flavors at your local Walmart. It is technically listed and sold in the "Coffee" section and is categorized as coffee but it hasn't any coffee in it. These are the ingredients:

Sugar, Nondairy Creamer (Coconut Oil, Corny Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate (A Milk Derivative), Dipotassium Phosphate, Sugar, Mono and Diglycerides, Silicon Dioxide, Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Soy Lecithin), Nonfat Dry Milk, Sweet Whey, Black Tea, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Spice Blend (Cinnamon, Anise, Cloves, Ginger), Honey.

The great thing about this drink is that it is ready to go and is in a powder form that you just add hot water. No milk or sugar needed (though you can still add if you desire). In a 12 oz glass you get 100 mg of caffeine and 8 mg/oz.

If this isn't really your "cup of tea" (haha) you can get earl grey / regular black teas (which I've been told are the highest in caffeine) and just make your own mixed drink. Best of luck!

If you need a caffeine drink in the morning tea is a good idea and there are now so many to choose from I'm sure you'll find something to please your pallet.

If you are looking for a morning 'boost' then you could try glucose tablets which you can buy over the counter at any pharmacy. They are also good for an early afternoon pick me up to help you through the day and no need to run to the loo!

Tea with a little milk and sugar. I gave up coffee due the same problem (coffee is acidic). I will occasionally have coffee but never on on empty stomach
