Espresso machines can be very finicky and there are many variables that will ruin a cup.

I haven't found any good ones under $500 (clogged filters, temp control, pressure problems) and the best are $700-1100+

Plus you need a really good grinder to get the grind fine & even enough for proper extraction.

I'd recommend a stove top Moka pot for your first attempt at espresso. You can use a regular grind of coffee, there's no tamping required, and all you need is a heat source (can even be used while camping). It's much easier to make a consistent espresso for around $50.

If you like it, you can decide if a fancy machine or just stick with what you have. I use both (plus 4 other methods) and I love my coffee from them all.

The bar rating (amount pf pressure) is not really a good indicator of quality. There are crummy 15 bar makers as well as great 15 bar makers. The higher the pressure in theory, the better the extraction and the nicer the crema. Pump driven is better than steam driven.

I see the cheap ones all the time at thrift stores because people don;t really use them that mucj. Why not buy one there for like 15 bucks, if you find you drink espresso 4 times a week, get a halfway dent one. If you find you only use it once or twice a month, you will save the several hundred dollars and the counter space.

If you are a serious espressor drinker, get a halfway decent (250-500 dollar) PUMP method maker from a good brand like Krups, Saeco, Gaggia, Breville, Bosch, etc. They will be easy to use, easy to clean.

I think it is a good idea to get a halfway decent one and live with a few years than to buy a 75-150 dollar model and let it sit underneath the kitchen cabinet.

I use a krups espresso novo model ($350) We use it several times a week.

Here is a great model on sale for $299 at Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00092ZVXA?ie=UTF8&tag=reviewsnratin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00092ZVXA Yes, you will surely want to avoid steam driven machines as they scortch the coffee and ruin the flavor. You won't find a 15 bar steam driven machine so no worries there. Pump or lever machines are what you are looking for.
